With more people in need and less money being given, charities anticipate that there will be a greater demand this holiday season for donations of money, toys and food.[[In-content Ad]]One local company, DePuy Orthopaedics, has made a sizable donation to two local charities, Our Father's House and Combined Community Services, to help members of the community in need.
"We expected that there was going to be a great need," said Peggi Lisenbee-Wright, director of client services for Combined Community Services. "What has surprised us in the number of families that are coming to us for the very first time. We know that it is hard for many families to make ends meet, and especially at this time of year, it is tough to ignore children's needs."
DePuy Orthopaedics President David Floyd said, "When we spoke with these groups, we learned that their shelves are bare. We felt it was important to give back to our community so they can help others this holiday season."
"DePuy's donation has helped us to literally keep the lights on," said Roz Morgan, founding director of Our Father's House.
The donation will help the charities help local families who need assistance with utilities, and the number of people seeking assistance has increased this year.
"One hundred percent of the Emergency Assistance Program is funded by United Way, churches, businesses, and individuals. We're currently seeing an additional 200 families per month in the food pantry alone," said Lisenbee-Wright. "Without the support of our community, we would not be able to meet the huge need. DePuy's donation is an example of the true meaning of 'love thy neighbor' that is so prevalent in Kosciusko County."
Anyone who would like to help local charities is encouraged to do so.
Combined Community Services was founded in July 1984 by the Greater Warsaw Ministerial Association to stop duplication of services provided to those in need in Kosciusko County. CCS has become "the place for people in need" to go for assistance. From food, clothing, diapers, baby formula, or personal/hygiene products to financial assistance with utilities, CCS meets a variety of needs. CCS's motto is a "hand up, not a hand out." Our Father's House was founded in October 1997 by Roz Morgan to serve the needs of the poor. Today, the organization serves meals four days a week and operates a weekly food pantry. About 85 percent of funding for Our Father's House comes from sale of goods from the warehouse, as well as the organization's thrift store and catering services.
