Democrat State Treasurer Candidate Makes Stop At Fair

Boland, 71, Fishers, is seeking the seat in the Nov. 4 election.
Boland won the Democrat nomination to be on the ballot during a convention May 30 in Indianapolis. Kelly Mitchell, director of the state treasurer’s office, is the Republican candidate.
Boland, a 30-year educator, moved to Indiana in 2012 with his wife, Mary, after serving in the Illinois General Assembly for 16 years. He taught history and government for 30 years in Iowa and Illinois before retiring.
While serving in the legislature he was the vice chair of the veterans committee and passed two pieces of legislation: the Military Relief Act, which provides grants from voluntary contributions to families when they are under financial stress; and the Illinois Veterans Lottery Ticket, of which 100 percent of proceeds go to veterans programs.
He also served as chairman of the election and campaign reform committees and higher education and financial institution committees.
“I know a lot about financial institutions and how to invest,” Boland said.
While in office, he received 36 awards for his service in the House from groups representing educators, veterans, child advocates, agriculture and firefighters.
He is running for the treasurer’s office because he said he likes a challenge.
He said the job of the treasurer is to invest the state’s money, and he feels he can get better returns to provide money for road and bridge improvements and education.
“I want to be a taxpayer advocate and look for ways to save money for the taxpayers and help our small towns,” Boland said.
He said the Veterans Lottery Ticket is an idea he feels the state could adopt and that the auditor’s and treasurer’s offices could be combined to save the state money.
“I will be a strong voice for making sure there is someone standing up for working men and women and for senior citizens,” Boland said.
Since arriving in Indiana to be closer to family, Boland has become active in the Democratic Party, helping candidates and organizations with their mission to restore balance to Hoosier government.
Boland briefly sought election as a Democrat to Illinois’ 19th congressional district before bowing out in favor of a state senate race he lost in the Democratic primary to a political rival.
Boland and his wife left Illinois and moved to Hamilton County in 2012 after losing his primary race that year.[[In-content Ad]]
