FORT WAYNE — The Warsaw girls soccer team learned a little bit more about itself Saturday morning at The Plex in Fort Wayne.
After rolling past Culver 7-0 in their season opener Monday at home, things were a little tougher for the Lady Tigers in a 2-0 loss to DeKalb at Saturday’s Shindigz National Soccer Festival.
Graduating nine seniors, the inexperience of the 2013 Lady Tigers (1-1) was on display against the Lady Barons (3-0), who moved the ball with ease and won almost every 50/50 ball.
“We had a good game,” DeKalb coach Sam Weicht said. “We’ve played two in the last three days, so they were a little tired, but we had a good game – had good spacing, good passing, good showing of the feet. We worked on stuff in practice. We wanted to get the ball up the sideline, we wanted to get a couple good crosses in and we wanted to criss-cross our (midfielders), kind of distract them a little bit. We scored two goals off of that, so that was good.”
DeKalb senior Madison VanWye netted both of her team’s goals, scoring each off an assist from IUPUI-bound senior Kacey Wells.
“Teams know (she’s going to IUPUI) that, so as soon she gets it and they see the footwork, they begin to mark her up,” Weicht said of Wells. “So we’ve told the girls to get creative in the middle. We start criss-crossing and our girls move up and fill lanes. Madison just stepped up and was opportunistic.”
Her first goal came with 7:10 remaining in the first half, when that criss-crossing left her in a one-on-one with Warsaw senior goalkeeper Abby Schue, who she beat to the right side.
VanWye’s second goal came six minutes later, after Wells found her open in a cluster of girls, but she managed to settled the ball and boot it into the upper half of the goal.
Despite those two goals, Schue was active, posting 10 saves, five of which were achieved by her having to leap or dive.
“Warsaw’s keeper – holy cow, she is amazing,” Weicht said.
With so many inexperienced players on the field, as senior Zoe Smyth is the only returning defender, the Grace College-bound Schue will be integral to Warsaw’s success this year.
“She’s amazing,” first-year Warsaw coach Peter Lucht said of Schue. “I still push that if she’s not the top keeper, she’s one of the top keepers in the state. She made a couple nice saves, for sure.”
In front of Schue, things got a little hectic, which created some problems.
“Organizationally, just the defense and midfield communicating about who needed to be marking where,” Lucht said about what plagued his team. “That’s quite honestly the crux of the situation. Both goals came with people not being where they should have been, positionally.
“This is only their second official match, with a few practices,” he added. “We just need a little bit stronger communication from the back to the front. Once our backs get marked up, then our mids can get marked up from there. Too often, we found our midfielders actually marking their forwards. If people are marking in back, it created too much of a cluster where it shouldn’t have been and free space where it shouldn’t have been for their midfield to operate. We need to do a little bit better job on who’s marking who.”
With the midfield marking so far back, offensive opportunities were limited, as Warsaw’s first shot on goal didn’t come until 37:30 remained in the contest.
In total, DeKalb had 28 shots to Warsaw’s six and 12 shots on goal to Warsaw’s two.
As the season progresses, Lucht is confident the struggles from Saturday will be corrected.
“There's certainly been some change, probably been more than 11 – which is a starting lineup’s worth,” he said about the turnover from last year to this year. “We have the girls that are smart enough and good enough that should be able to bounce back.”
And they’re going to need to bounce back quickly, as the Northern Lakes Conference season opens Tuesday at home against Plymouth, then continues Thursday at NorthWood, before the girls host Class 2A No. 15 Mishawaka Marian Saturday, a team that won the Class 1A state title last year.
“It’s bang, bang, bang,” Lucht said. “ But win or lose, God is good.”
