DeGeeter Leads Warsaw To Win Over Carroll
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
Obviously, Warsaw girls basketball coach Will Wienhorst was pleased that his team improved to 13-1 with a 61-58 win over Carroll Wednesday night in the Tiger Den.
Strangely enough, he would have been okay with a loss, too.
"This was a great game for us, win or lose," said Wienhorst. "This is the first time we have seen a box-and-one, and that is very good for us. We wanted to see that type of defense, and we got some really good experience with it tonight."
After fallig behind early, the Tigers clawed their way back from a 12-point deficit early in he third quarter to earn the three-point victory in the highly anticipated game against the Chargers.
One big reason for the Warsaw comeback was Tiger junior Michelle DeGeeter. While the Charger defense stifled Tiger powerhouse Jaclyn Leininger early, DeGeeter helped keep the Tigers alive, especially in the third quarter when she went 3 for 4 from the field and 2 for 3 at the charity stripe. DeGeeter finished the night with 20 points and led all scorers on the floor.
"Michelle DeGeeter really stepped up tonight," said Wienhorst. "That makes us very happy. Carroll held Jaclyn Leininger to just 11 points, and we were still able to beat Carroll."
Warsaw's Julie Seiss scored the first basket of the game, but that 2-0 lead was the only advantage Warsaw held until halfway through the fourth frame.
At the 6:02 mark in the first frame, Carroll started an 8-1 run that gave the Chargers a 12-5 lead.
With just 3:01 left in the first quarter, Warsaw fought back to within one, 12-11, after Rebekah Reichard and Seiss scored six straight points.
But Carroll charged right back and built a 19-13 lead by the end of the first frame. Carroll added to that lead throught the second quarter and took a 35-27 advantage at the half.
After Abby Noll and Kelly Meiklejon scored the first two baskets of the second half, Carroll held its largest lead of the game, 39-27.
That's when the Tiger offense kicked into gear. Warsaw chipped away at the Charger lead as DeGeeter caught fire. At the 5:28 mark in the third, DeGeeter started a seven-point burst that cut Carroll's lead to five, 39-34.
Seiss picked up where DeGeeter left off, hitting a basket and two free throws to cap off an 11-0 Warsaw run that sliced Carroll's lead to one, 39-38.
However, Carroll's hot shooting Knoll, Tamesha Scotton and Amanda Ponsot put the Chargers back in the lead 48-40 at the end of the third frame.
Enter DeGeeter and Seiss once again. DeGeeter opened the fourth with a basket, and Seiss hit a free throw to reduce the lead to five, 48-43.
After Scotton missed two free throws for the Chargers, DeGeeter stepped up once again. She hit a basket, and Reichard hit another to put Warsaw within one, 48-47.
Two more missed free throws by Scotten led to another DeGeeter basket, and Warsaw's first lead since the opening basket of the game.
The contest belonged to the Tigers from then on. Carroll managed to tie the score at 53-all with 3:03 left to play, but Warsaw never allowed the Chargers to take the lead again.
At the 2:38 mark, Seiss hit another basket to give Warsaw a 55-53 lead, and the Tigers outscored the Chargers 5-3 in the final two minutes of play to earn the three-point victory.
"I think our team plays better tired," said Wienhorst. "Defense was the key tonight. I think the girls are finally realizing how important defense is. We thought if we could keep them in the 50's we could win this game, and we did."
But this is not the last time the Tigers might see Carroll. The Chargers are in the same sectional as the Tigers, so there is a chance they will meet again in February for a rematch.
