Defense, Clutch Trey Lift Valley Over Triton

AKRON – Neither Tippecanoe Valley or Triton shot the ball particularly well in Wednesday night’s high school girls basketball game in Akron.
When her team needed it most, however, Valley sophomore Meredith Brouyette found her touch, lifting the host Lady Vikings to a 35-34 win over the Class 1A No. 7 Lady Trojans.
With Valley trailing 34-32, Brouyette swished a three-pointer from the corner with 11 seconds remaining.
Brouyette was just 1 of 5 from the field Wednesday prior to her game-winning shot, while Valley finished the game 13 of 38 overall, 2 of 5 from the arc, and only 7 of 16 from the charity stripe.
“She didn’t hesitate,” Valley coach Chris Kindig said of Brouyette. “She’s that good of a shooter, and I’m comfortable with her taking that shot. We didn’t shoot well tonight, but there’s going to be nights where she lights it up. This should help her confidence.”
Valley junior Karis Tucker made a steal on Triton’s ensuing possession and was fouled immediately.
Tucker went to the free throw line for two shots with just under two seconds left. She missed both, but her pilfer and Brouyette’s timely trey helped the Lady Vikings snap a four-game losing streak to Triton.
Valley is now 6-1 on the season, while Triton fell to 6-3.
“Getting a defensive stop (after Brouyett’s shot) was huge,” said Kindig. “Tucker has played great defense all year. We probably wouldn’t have won a game like this last year. The biggest difference for us this year is defense. We talked about it all summer and worked on it. Our defense has been a lot more consistent this year, it’s why we’re 6-1.”
The Lady Trojans, who struggled through a 14-of-40 shooting performance, played pretty good defense too, holding the Lady Vikings 18 points under their season scoring average.
“We didn’t shoot particularly well, but we got shots we wanted,” said Triton coach Adam Heckaman. “This was two teams playing good defense. They just made one more play than we did. I thought we played pretty good defense. If you told me Valley was only going to score 35 points, I’d be happy with that. They just made one more play than we did.”
Valley led 6-4 after one quarter of play and 15-12 at halftime.
Triton led 23-22 at the end of the third quarter and senior Becca Kennedy’s bucket with 24 seconds left gave the Lady Trojans a 34-32 lead.
“We had some kids step up tonight, like Jaela (Meister) and Becca (Kennedy),” said Heckaman. “(Anne) Secrest is just so tough for them. She’s one of, if not the best player in the area. I thought we did a good job on her. We made her earn it.”
Secrest, Valley’s standout 6-foot sophomore and reigning Times-Union Player of the Year, scored a game-high 16 points.
She also grabbed a team-high six rebounds and blocked four shots.
Brouyette finished with seven points, while senior Caylie Teel and sophomore Hannah Dunn scored four points each and junior Brynda Krueger and Tucker chipped in with two points each.
For Triton, Meister led the way with 11 points, while senior Krystal Sellers scored eight points and Kennedy finished with seven.
Senior Lauren Hostrawser scored four points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds for the Lady Trojans.
“It’s nice to break through and get a win against Triton,” said Kindig. “Our girls are young, and Triton has five seniors, they’ve been through the wars. I’m proud of our girls.”
Valley is in action Friday when it hosts Three Rivers Conference foe North Miami, while Triton travels to Northern State Conference rival Bremen Friday.
