After three months of bow hunting in the city limits, 41 deer have been harvested by the 41 trained archers who participated in the efforts.

Archers hunted in declared nuisance zones Oct. 1 through Nov. 26 and Dec. 8 through Jan. 2 at dusk. Archers hunted on weekdays, excluding holidays.

There were 44 archers who qualified to participate in this year's efforts, but only 41 participated with 22 archers being successful in harvesting deer.

There were 38 deer taken by the 16 archers who participated in last year's efforts.

This was the third year for the reduction efforts. The first year for the efforts was in 2006 when 15 archers harvested 18 deer.[[In-content Ad]]The nuisance zones included the entire area around Spring Hill, Oakwood Cemetery, Kosciusko Community Hospital and U.S. 30.

The archers were selected by a management committee consisting of Mayor Ernie Wiggins, Warsaw Police Chief Perry Hunter, Deer Task Force Chair Jeff Grose, and Deer Task Force member Matt Dick and City Councilman Joe Thallemer.

The archers were required to fill out sheets each time they hunted that included information such as the zone they hunted in, the time the archer entered and left the zone, the number of deer observed, and whether they observed other hunters. They were required to turn the sheets into Hunter after each reduction effort.

Hunter said he was surprised more deer were not taken, but was pleased with the efforts.

Grose said he was pleased with the archer's efforts, but it was discouraging that the nuisance zones were not approved to be expanded for this year.

He said the next step is to evaluate the data collected from the archer's log sheets and he will present the results to Warsaw City Council. He said another resolution would need to be approved this summer for another reduction effort next year.
