Warsaw girls tennis coach Rick Orban said he's not surprised Jessica Davis is playing in the singles state finals Friday at Indianapolis North Central High School.

Her play all season, and tournament success as of late, back it up.

"I'm not surprised at all," Orban said Wednesday evening. "She's been the No. 1 singles player at Warsaw for three years. She's probably playing the best tennis of her life right now, she's playing with a lot of confidence."

Davis, a 17-year-old junior, plays Friday at 2 p.m. when she puts her 16-4 season record on the line against Columbus North Junior Michelle Hawes (19-3).

Both sport 5-0 records thus far in the state tournament.

"She's got a real good shot Friday, which would take her into the Final Four," Orban said. "To be honest with you, I'd be surprised if she didn't win."

A win over Hawes puts her in the Final Four in a likely matchup with Carmel sophomore Sophie Grabinski and her 16-0 season record. That match would take place Saturday at 10 a.m.

Grabinski helped Carmel to the team state championship this past weekend at North Central as the Greyhounds blanked both Penn and Jasper 5-0.

Grabinski opens first-round action against the winner of the play-in match, which features Lawrence North senior Laura Trimble (19-1) against Evansville Central senior Brittany Brown (20-0).

Davis enters this weekend's singles and doubles state finals on the strength of winning the 18-year-old division in a tournament Saturday at the Griffith Match Point Raquet Club. Orban estimates there were 30 girls in her division and that Davis' toughest match came against Warsaw teammate Kaitlyn Macdonald, who finished third in the division.

Tiger Teammate Kristi Haddad finished fourth in the same division, while Warsaw player Ashley Harrison was runner-up in the 16-year-old division.

"Jessica was real impressive in the tournament," Orban said. "She's playing really good tennis right now."

Davis has also been invited to play for the Whitman Cup, where every year Orban says six to eight girls from northern Indiana are selected to play against other top players.

Practice for that starts Sunday at Ball State University and is instructed by Notre Dame women's head coach Jay Louderback. [[In-content Ad]]
