Davidson trial delayed

Kosciusko Circuit Court Judge Rex Reed denied a December request to delay the murder trial of Jason Davidson, but has now agreed to continue the matter.
Davidson, 33, of Leesburg, was scheduled for a five-day trial to begin April 7. Defense attorney Michael Miner was denied a continuance in a January ruling by Reed, but on Monday Reed issued an order vacating the scheduled April setting. A new trial date was not set.
The order came after a joint motion by special prosecutor Matthew Rentschler of the Whitley County Prosecutor's Office and Miner.
Miner said this morning that the continuance was requested because "basically, there's more work necessary on both sides to get ready for trial."
Rentschler could not be reached for comment.
Davidson is accused of murder in the May 2 shooting death of Samuel J. Creekmore, 30, of Warsaw. Creekmore was the current husband of Davidson's ex-wife. Creekmore suffered five gunshot wounds, three of which were to the head and two the mid-section of the torso, after Davidson allegedly entered Creekmore's Melody Acres home.
Davidson reportedly was on the telephone talking with his former wife, Alicia Davidson-Creekmore, when he allegedly told her to "hang on for a second." Davidson-Creekmore was upstairs in the residence and told police she heard a door open and heard Creekmore screaming before she and Christina Barden, who also lived in the house, ran downstairs. They allegedly saw Davidson holding a gun before he fled from the home.
Davidson was arrested and charged with Creekmore's murder shortly after the shooting occurred. He also faces a firearms enhancement charge, which will add time to any prison sentence Davidson receives if convicted of the crime. A murder conviction is punishable by 45 to 65 years in prison.
Miner is pursuing an insanity defense in the case.
Davidson is being held without bond in the Kosciusko County Jail. [[In-content Ad]]
