He was born Sept. 3, 1938, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to James Theodore and Ruth Eleanor Welsh Pittman. On May 28, 1962, in Elizabeth City, N.C., he married Twyla White.
He graduated from Perry High School in Pittsburgh. He lived in Claypool for four years.
He entered the U.S. Army Oct. 10, 1969, in Pittsburgh. He served for 20 years as a stock control clerk and shipping clerk. SSG David William Pittman retired in Fort Knox, Ky., on Jan. 31, 1978.
He was a member of VFW Post #1126 and American Legion Post #49.
Surviving are seven daughters: Sharon (and spouse Mark) Vance, Claypool; Katherine Westerman, Sidney; Kay (and spouse Johnny) White, Newport News, Va.; Janet (and spouse Bennie) Williamson, Concord, Va.; Linda (and spouse Ron) Ramey, Van Lear, Ky.; Donna (and spouse Mickey) Blankenship, Warsaw; Bertha (and spouse Leroy) Sprouse, Hudson, Fla.; one son, Harold (and spouse Barbara) Camden, Fort Pierce, Fla.; 15 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and one brother, William (and spouse Espa) Pittman, Pittsburgh. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Sharon and Patricia Pittman, and one brother, James Pittman.
A military graveside service will be at a later date in Roseland Cemetery, Roseland, Va.
