SYRACUSE - Darrell W. Bales, 70, of Syracuse, died at 8:55 p.m. Aug. 21, 2008, in his residence after an eight-year battle with cancer.

He was born Feb. 13, 1938, in Redkey, to LeRoy and Thelma Dotson Bales. On July 16, 1983, he married Sharon Levernier, who survives.

He move to the Syracuse area in 1956, working at Kroger as a meat cutter before opening Bales Butcher Shop Aug. 28, 1978, in Syracuse. He was the owner/operator of Bales Butcher Shop for the past 30 years. He was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church.

Also surviving are two sons, Dan (and spouse Becky) Bales, Goshen, and Chris Bales, Syracuse; three daughters: LuAnn (and spouse Gary) Hershberger, Millersburg; Marcy Ernest, Goshen; and Amie Bales, South Bend; four grandchildren; one step-grandson; one great-grandson; two sisters: Edy Wood, Redkey; Ruth Myers, Albany; and three brothers: Leroy Bales Jr., Muncie; Bill Bales, Redkey; and Dick Bales, Titusville, Fla. He was preceded in death by his first wife and a sister.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mishler-Eastlund Funeral Home, Harris Chapel, Syracuse, with Pastor Richard Dunning officiating. Private burial will be at a later date in Syracuse Cemetery.

Calling is from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the funeral home.
