Regent Kathy Gawthrop opened the meeting by leading them in the opening rituals and reading the president general’s message for the month.
Following lunch, Gawthrop introduced speaker Jack Elam. He is a descendant of Pocahontas, and he told them about visiting her burial site in England, where she had been visiting when she died. Elam gave a program about the local Indiana tribes in Kosciusko County including the Pottawatomi, Miami and Algonquin.
Gawthrop read an invitation from the Col. Augustin de la Balme chapter to join them for a wreath-laying ceremony in Columbia City. They also received a new chapter ceremony invitation from the Olde Vistula Road Chapter, LaGrange. Information was passed out about collecting box tops and labels for DAR schools. The group was given names of boys living in the Indiana building at Tamassee DAR school, and were asked to send them cards for their birthdays, Christmas and holidays.
Kay Ritter read some conservations tips, and asked that they report recycling, tree -planting and composting. Susan Creamer read the secretary’s report and Paulene Holderman gave the treasurer’s report. Subscriptions to the DAR magazine, “American Spirit,” was discussed. The chapter donates a magazine subscription to all public libraries and high schools in the county.
The next meeting will be at noon Nov. 25 at Richards Restaurant. The speaker will be a Vietnam veteran.
Membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution is open to any woman who has a direct-line ancestor who fought or aided in the patriots’ cause during the American Revolutionary War. For more information, contact Gawthrop at 574-982-7055.[[In-content Ad]]
