He was born Oct. 3, 1949, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Paul Patrick and Eileen McGlynn Flaherty. He was married to Judith Wujcik Flaherty, who preceded him in death June 28, 2003, after 25 years of marriage.
He graduated from Chesterton High School in 1967 and attended the University of Detroit. He joined the U.S. Army in 1968 and served in the Vietnam War as a scout dog handler, where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart. He was a graduate of Loyola University of Chicago. Before retiring to Myrtle Beach, he had a long career as a technical service/sales engineer for the rubber industry. He was an avid golfer and fisherman. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his daughter Keara (and spouse David) Ide, Barrington, Ill.; and three grandchildren: Charles, 3; and twins Henry and Margaret, 8 months; six brothers and sisters; Molly (and spouse Michael) Haas, Carmel; James, the Philippines; Roy, Mary Katherine Hamilton, Marjorie (and spouse Thomas) Potter, all of Chesteron; Paul (and spouse Janet), Encino, Calif.; Eileen (and spouse Gregory) Lee, East Waterboro, Maine; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was also preceded in death by his parents and nephew, James McGlynn Haas.
An Irish Wake will be from noon to 3 p.m. Dec. 13 at Gelsosomos, Chesterton.
