This award honors a CEAS Distinguished Alumnus whose career reflects the college’s commitment to excellence, achievement and service.
“I can’t think of a more gratifying and stimulating career,” said Miller.
Miller, 65, grew up in Springfield, Ohio. While there, he met and married his childhood sweetheart, Mary Louise.
He received his bachelor’s degree in 1969 in mechanical materials science engineering from General Motors Institute.
Miller then earned a master’s degree (’71) and PhD. (’74) in materials science-biomedical engineering from the University of Cincinnati.
Miller was a successful biomedical engineer.
He went into orthopedics at Zimmer in Warsaw as director of biomedical engineering.
A few years later, he moved to San Diego to serve as the director of biomedical engineering for Cutter Biomedical, a division of Cutter Laboratories.
Miller and three other individuals from Warsaw made the decision to start a biomedical company of their own. Biomet Inc. was established in 1978.
Miller, Niles L. Noblitt, Jerry L. Ferguson and M. Ray Harroff are Warsaw locals who share extensive orthopedic manufacturing experience.
Starting at $17,000 annual sales in 1978, Biomet Inc. now does more than $2 billion in sales annually and continues to grow exponentially.
Since 1978 through March 2006, Miller served as the president and CEO of Biomet.
His accomplishments include being named Entrepreneur of the Year (1989), being awarded the Small Business Administration National Entrepreneurial Success Award by President George Bush (1991), creating several new joint replacement systems and servicing more than one million patients annually.
Miller remains involved with the company as a member on the Biomet board of directors.
Miller released his book “The Maverick CEO” in 2010, which is an account of his life including his time at the University of Cincinnati, the start, struggles and success of Biomet – including his decision to step down as CEO in 2006 to spend more time with his wife, daughters and grandchildren.[[In-content Ad]]
