He was born March 2, 1931, in Claypool, to Cyril C. and Helen Timmins Brooke. On Dec. 18, 1954, in Bronson, Mich., he married Mary Edna Graham, who survives.
He attended North Manchester College, Goshen College and Bethel College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in education. He earned a master’s degree in education from I.U. Bloomington in 1959.
He served in the U.S. Army from July 21, 1952, to June 24, 1954, serving in the Korean War. He started his career in education in North Liberty by teaching and coaching the junior high basketball team from 1956-58. He was principal at Hay Elementary School, South Bend, from 1959 to 1985 and simultaneously at the former Centre Township Elementary School from 1969-70, during its final year. After leaving Hay, he became principal at McKinley Elementary School, South Bend, from 1985-91.
During his professional career, he was a member of Kiwanis and the National Principals Association. After retirement he was briefly active in The Gideon’s International, Prison Ministries and was a student teacher evaluator for St. Mary’s College and IUSB.
He retired in 1991 after 35 years in education.
Also surviving are four children, Brian (and spouse Evelyn) Brooke, Brenda (and spouse Keith) Walorski and Brad (and spouse Kim) Brooke, all of South Bend, and Becky (and spouse Geff) Fisher, Bristol; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and siblings, Dwight (and spouse Arlene) Brooke, Mentone; Jergene Brooke, St. Louis, Mo.; and Daniel (and spouse Vera) Brooke, North Liberty.
Services were at 11 a.m. today at South Side Church of God, South Bend. Burial was in Sumption Prairie Cemetery.
Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, South Bend, was in charge of arrangements.
