WINONA LAKE - Go a new distance.

Go farther than you've ever gone before or have gone this year.

And do it while helping break the cycle of poverty for children in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

2nd Mile Missions and 2nd Mile Adventures, both not-for-profit organizations, are having a benefit for the children Oct. 10 at 7:30 a.m. at the Trail House Parking Lot, Winona Lake. The Poverty Cycle Challenge is for bike riders to help raise awareness and funds for the work 2nd Mile is doing in Bavaro, Dominican Republic.

A minimum $50 sponsorship is required to ride. Riders get sponsorships and pledges per miles they ride. One-hundred percent of the money raised goes straight to the 2nd Mile Missions project.

There will be a 20-mile bicycle loop ride, a 100-mile loop and a 200-mile loop. The 20-mile will be local, the 100-mile will cover a large portion of Northern Indiana, and the 200-mile goes all the way up to Michigan.

The 20-mile loop can be taken any time Oct. 10 up to 11 a.m. The 100-mile loop kicks off at 8 a.m., while the 200-mile loop starts at 5:30 a.m.

The bicycle ride is not a race. It is an endurance and cycle challenge, said Brent Wildman.

"The more miles you ride, the more funds you raise," he said.[[In-content Ad]]The goal is to raise at least $20,000. Brent said the organizations already have a very good financial response.

In the past, 2nd Mile Missions has helped financially support a school in a Haitian immigrant neighborhood in Bavaro. The non-profit organization has built an addition to the school, which doubles as a church, and constructed a food distribution kitchen to feed the poor living nearby. 2nd Mile Missions has purchased a school bus to transport kids to school and people to church. Since its inception, the group also has donated shoes, clothes, toothbrushes and toothpaste.

Next, 2nd Mile Missions wants to build a school to help feed and educate the Haitian and Dominican Republic children in Bavaro. According to Brent and Rod Wildman, the school will be bilingual and teach the kids English. Once that school is completed, funds will be raised to build a high school to continue the kids' education and teach them a trade.

2nd Mile Adventures offers various events throughout the year, from a Polar Bear Dip Jan. 1 to snow skiing, motorcycle and bicycle rides. However, Brent said, 2nd Mile Missions is the biggest undertaking of 2nd Mile Adventures.

"It's all about getting the people together and sharing our true purpose in life - serving others. It's anything but serving ourselves," said Brent.

Rod said Haitians travel to the Dominican Republic looking for work. Since they're not citizens, however, they're not supported by the Dominican government, can't go to school and end up in menial jobs. By building a school and providing an education to the Haitian children, Brent said, 2nd Mile Missions wants to break the cycle of poverty.

The 2nd Mile organizations are working on the project with the House of God for the Nations church in Bavaro and Pastor Pascual Borrell. Rod said Borrell has such a vision for the undertaking. The goal is to have the school up and running by next fall.

"Our little community here, Warsaw and Winona Lake, could make a world of difference in that community down there and we are such a conduit of making that happen," Brent said of the organizations.

There are a large number of people who participate in 2nd Mile Adventures, Brent said. They take part in the adventures, but also help with the mission work. Rod said 2nd Mile Adventures started about eight to nine years ago, with 2nd Mile Missions starting about five years ago.
