NORTH MANCHESTER - For most of the seven area cross country runners competing in the semistate round Saturday, aspirations did not exist of reaching the state finals.

A few knew that with a perfect race and a lot of help, there was an outside chance of placing in the top 15 and moving on. However, that did not happen as the top runner placed 37th.

Warsaw's David Hoffert, Manchester's Jeremy Stacy, Valley's Jenny Day, NorthWood's Brooke Tobias, and Wawasee's Katie McCauley all competed at the Manchester Semistate. Triton's Mason McIntyre and Reghan Kreft both ran at the New Prairie Semistate.

Hoffert, a Warsaw senior, was considered to have the best chance of the seven runners to advance to the state finals. He finished 13th in one of the most difficult regionals in the state. He was hoping to finish between 25th and 30th, but ended 37th.

"It was a great performance," Warsaw head coach Jeff Grose said. "He ran into some very good runners and that was beyond his control. I think he walked away from the meet very happy."

Stacy, a senior All-Three Rivers Conference performer this year for the Squires, finished in 85th place with a time of 17:18, approximately 30 seconds slower than the times he has run during the season on his home course.

"(Stacy's performance) was just average," Manchester head coach Kevin Walter said. "With the field all bunched up, (the slower time) is expected. He's been our leader for three years and has been a captain the last two years for us. He hopes to continue running at college and will probably do better there than he did in high school. His endurance will carry him further."

On the girls side, Day was the top local runner with a 45th place finish out of 160 runners. She had a time of 15:51.

Tobias, who will return for the Panthers next year, took 62nd with a time of 16:06. McCauley, an underclassman, was expected to be Wawasee's No. 4 runner heading into the season, but improved throughout and was the only Warrior to advance to the semistate. She ended in 93rd with a time of 16:34.

At the New Prairie Semistate, neither McIntyre or Kreft placed in the top 15 for Triton, but both will be back next year to lead a boys team that placed third in the sectional and a girls team that ended first. Both teams will return most of their starters from this year.

The top five teams and the top 15 individuals will compete in the state finals on Saturday in Bloomington.
