“Donating much-needed protein to the Food Bank of Northern Indiana is our way of giving back to the local community,” said Mindy Truex, vice president of Creighton Brothers LLC. “Creighton Brothers is a third generation family business and we take pride in donating eggs year-round to those in need.”
In total, Creighton Brothers will donate 90,720 eggs to the Food Bank of Northern Indiana this year, including the 7,560 eggs donated Friday.
Sources of high-quality protein like fresh eggs are among the most-needed items at food assistance organizations. United States Department of Agriculture claims that one large egg delivers six grams of protein and 13 essential nutrients such as choline, folate, iron and zinc. Additionally, the USDA concluded in 2011 that the average amount of cholesterol in eggs was 14 percent lower and vitamin D content 64 percent higher than previously thought.
“I know our pantry partners and clients really appreciate that we have fresh eggs to offer,” said Milt Lee, executive director. “There is no substitute for the versatility of eggs and the importance in our diets. And, there is no substitute for the relationship we have with Creighton Brothers.”
More than 1 million residents in the state of Indiana are food insecure, meaning they lack access to enough food for all household members and have limited availability of nutritionally adequate foods, according to the company’s announcement.
Members of the United Egg Producers are contributing to food banks all across America to ease the struggle of putting food on the table during the Easter holiday – and throughout the year. UEP is encouraging other companies and individuals to join the fight against hunger and support the 49 million Americans who live in food insecure homes, 15.9 million of which are children.
“Our egg farmers donate a generous amount of fresh eggs to their local food assistance organizations year-round,” said Chad Gregory, president and CEO of United Egg Producers. “It is especially important that companies give back as families come together during the Easter season and make high-protein foods, such as eggs, available to food insecure families nationwide.”
For the seventh Easter season, the United Egg Producers have organized a nationwide effort to give to food-insecure families, bringing the total number of fresh eggs donated by U.S. egg farmers since 2008 to 70 million.
