Kosciusko County has a high rate of car and train accidents, according to Kosciusko County Highway Superintendent and Engineer Rob Ladson.

In an effort to reduce those numbers, and with a $34,000 grant, the Kosciusko County Highway Department is making railroad crossings throughout the county safer by installing warning and stop signs at targeted crossings.

"We don't have jurisdiction to put crossing lights and gates at crossings," said Ladson. Those are put up by the state and cost an estimated $150,000 each.

Tuesday, the Kosciusko County Commissioners approved the installation of stop signs at the following railroad crossings: Old Road 15 and CR 600N on the northeast corner of the railroad tracks; South and North streets in Milford Junction on the southwest and northeast corners of the tracks; county roads 300S, 350S, 400S, 550S, 800S, 900S, 950S, 1200S and 1300S on the southwest and northeast corners of the railroad tracks; county roads 100W, 150E, 250E, 300E, 75W and 200W on the southeast and northwest corners of the railroad tracks.

In other business, the commissioners:

• Approved Devon and Mary E. Zolman's petition to rezone ground from an agricultural district to residential. The property is on the east side of Ind. 15 and north of CR 700S in Clay Township, Claypool. Approximately 49 acres are involved. The Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission unanimously approved the petition at its meeting three weeks ago.

Area Plan Director Dan Richard said the plan commission approved of the petition because the property is adjacent to where sewer lines can be extended as well as water and utilities. There is also support from the town of Claypool for the the rezoning and project.

"I'd like to see it developed so the town can grow," said Devon Zolman.

• Was presented with an update on the county's and county employees' insurance.

• Approved Dave Spangel's petition for a driveway on a platted right of way that's not county-maintained and -improved. The right of way is near Indian Trail and Shutt Street. Spangel will also remove approximately five small trees. Ladson said the county highway department sees no reason not to allow the driveway.

The commissioners also approved two special driveway permits along CR 450W and CR 1000N.

• Was presented with the county highway's 2000 tentative road (repair/improvement) program.

"It's very similar to what we did in the past," Ladson said.

• Approved $1,989 to repair the county courthouse sidewalk from Buffalo Street up to the steps of the courthouse.

County commissioners are Brad Jackson, Avis Gunter and Eddie Creighton. [[In-content Ad]]
