County Tax Bills On Time

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

Kosciusko County Council took time Thursday to thank those working in the county offices who helped get this year's tax bills prepared and mailed out.

Kosciusko County was one of only two counties statewide to send out property tax bills on time this year. Owen County, in Southern Indiana, was the only other county to complete all the steps necessary to issue bills.[[In-content Ad]]The spring installment of 2008-pay-2009 taxes were due Monday. County Assessor Laurie Renier told the council her office received a kudos letter from the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance congratulating them for keeping the county on its tax schedule.

"I'm amazed at all we're accomplishing when everyone pulls together," said Renier. "We're making great strides."

"I want to praise all the people in the courthouse who have contributed," said Council President Harold Jones. "It really is a big issue and we really appreciate what you've done."

In other news, the council approved capital projects funds for Mentone's Bell Memorial Library and Warsaw Community Public Library.

The council approved $172,035 for WCPL, the same amount the county approved last year, but almost $22,000 less than Library Director Ann Zydek requested. Councilman Larry Teghtmeyer made the motion to approve the same amount as last year's fund.

"I think with the way the economy is, we need to flatline the dollars this year and maybe next year," Teghtmeyer said.

"We tried to watch our dollars and stretch the best we can," Zydek said.

The council approved the requested $15,681 for the Bell Memorial Library.

The council also approved the transfer of $7,210.40 from reimbursement insurance to repairs and maintenance for the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department. Sheriff Rocky Goshert told the council the money is needed for repairs to the department's boat, which he said had been sunk.
