County Snow Plowing

Where are the snow plows when we need them?

On Sunday morning after we had already gotten 10 inches of snow, we heard over the scanner that the plows would not be on the roads until after 8 a.m. Not even the police, that serve to protect our county, could get to work.

We live in one of the largest and most financially prosperous counties in the state. But you would never know it by driving on our streets and roads. They are not only poorly maintained, but leave a lot to be desired as far as snow and ice removal.

I don't know what changed in our county highway department in the last two years, but I'm sure that I'm not the only one who is complaining. I have heard it from many people who especially live on county roads.

It has not always been like this. The winter before last, the roads were very well maintained and the snow was removed promptly. This year, they have waited to plow until the cars have already packed the snow down. This makes the roads like washboards that destroy the suspension and other undercarriage parts on your vehicle. Or they salt the packed down snow so that when the sun shines, it all turns to deep slush that pulls your car all over the roadway.

I hope that the last week's snow isn't an indication of what is yet to come. If it is, no one will be able to get to work to keep this county as prosperous.

I have pity on those who drive these roads for a living.

Besides, our taxes keep going up and the Hoosier lottery is supposedly helping to support some of the maintenance. So where is it going? And I do understand how much work and man hours are involved.

Is it gas prices? Lack of finances? Inadequate employees to do the job?

Many people are wondering, what is different this year?
