Bill and Carol Huffer reported on their road cleanup plans at the commissioners meeting Tuesday.

The Huffers expressed their dismay about the trash along county roads at the March 21 meeting. They, along with a committee of Sue Studebaker, Aaron Rovenstine, Church Ranney, Dennis Pletcher, Jim Mannan and Ken Locke, have designated April 21-23 as cleanup days.

Colored trash bags will be used to collect material along Old 30, County Farm Road, Crystal Lake Road, Packerton Road and Country Club Road.

Carol Huffer said the landfill will accept these bags at no cost.

Studebaker, Kosciusko County Solid Waste Management District director, said a dumpster specifically for road or street trash will be at the Kosciusko County Depot. Anyone can pick up a bright orange trash bag, clean up any roadside, and take the trash back to the Depot, 220 S. Union St., Warsaw, and throw it away. The dumpster will be available the last week of April.

Ranney plans to organize a group in Syracuse to clean up several roads in Turkey Creek Township. Volunteers will meet at the Wawasee Chapel April 22 at 8 a.m.

Schools also will be contacted about cleaning their grounds.

Indiana Department of Environmental Management Regional Director Michael Aylesworth and Environmental Manager James Weingart appeared before the board outlining several programs.

The board also:

• Accepted a contract from the Troyer Group for the design and engineering of a two-lane highway from U.S. 30, at the old rest area, to Crystal Lake Road.

Before the first load of gravel is dumped, engineers are asking for about $300,000 to study the "western route."

Construction of the U.S. 30 - Crystal Lake Road section is phase one of the road's construction.

The contract will be considered at the April 18 commissioners meeting.

• Dr. Michael Williams was appointed to the board of health to replace Dr. Wymond Wilson, who resigned.

• Agreed to participate in the 2006 home and garden show at the fairgrounds April 21-23.

• Heard property tax bills should be in the mail by April 24.

• Heard a state-sponsored emergency preparedness grant has been approved and will pay for half of Emergency Management Director Ed Rock's and his administrative assistant's salary.

• Approved the vacation of a public way in Turkey Creek Township - Wright's Way - as requested by Robert, Brian and Katherine Fanning.

• Tabled a vacation request on Waveland Beach along Lake Wawasee when Jim Beamer presented a petition against the action.

• Tabled a request to vacate portions of easements in the Greystone Subdivision in Plain Township until more information is collected. [[In-content Ad]]
