County Red Cross Raising Funds

The American Red Cross knows about disasters.

It’s on site for the families affected by the devastation caused by tornadoes, flooding, ice storms and other acts of destruction.

With support from Paragon Medical, the local chapter is kicking off a new campaign to raise funds to make sure the Kosciusko County Chapter has the capacity to respond to disasters and the community is knowledgeable about how to prepare for disasters.

The gift Friday represents Paragon’s support for the campaign and also provides the initial Platinum gift toward building “Disaster Partners”.

The goal of this program is to secure $40,000 of support from area businesses and organizations. These funds will then be used to train more volunteers, respond to local disasters and provide education throughout the county on how to plan and prepare for disasters that have the potential to impact individual families or entire communities.

Tobias Buck, CEO of Paragon Medical, said, “When we look at southern Indiana and all the other areas of the Midwest who have suffered terrible loss over the last year, we know it is not a question of if a disaster will happen here but rather a matter of when.  Therefore, we must prepare for what we hope will never happen and remain diligent about getting ready.”

Paragon is going the extra mile and has also agreed to participate in a program called “Ready When the Time Comes.” At least 10 Paragon employees will be trained in Red Cross disaster response and when a disaster strikes locally, they will be released from their duties at Paragon to help in the response. Similar to the multiple ways the Red Cross serves the community, this is a way for businesses to partner with the Red Cross to do the same.

Kimberly Stout, emergency services director for the chapter, stated that this training program increases the chapter’s capacity by providing a reserve corps of volunteers who are only activated for large local disasters. Because the local Kosciusko County Emergency Plan assigns the responsibility for shelter and food to the local Red Cross, it must make sure that it has adequate supplies and enough volunteers to fulfill this role.
If your business or organization would like to partner with the Red Cross, contact the local chapter at .574-267-5244.
