Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission held its first meeting Wednesday of the new year and heard issues ranging from Silver Lake to Syracuse.

Mike Bauer, from Silver Lake Partners, addressed the board concerning the former Silver Lake Elementary School.

Bauer asked the board to recommend to the Silver Lake Town Council that they approve the rezoning of the school from a public use district to a commercial district.

The board unanimously voted to recommend to the Silver Lake Town Council to approve the rezoning.

Bauer said he asked Silver Lake residents to give their input about what should be done with the building. The initial plans for the building are to put some apartments in the school.

The board reheard a motion to vacate a road in Long's First Addition, which is located off Lake James.

Steve Snyder, the attorney representing land owners who want the road to be vacated, told the board that the road isn't for public use.

After several back-and-forth discussions, the board once again decided not to vacate the road. The issue will once again go before the county commissioners when they meet Jan. 20 at 9:30 a.m.

The board approved a recommendation that 117 acres of land in Syracuse be designated as economic development areas.

The plan commission heard a presentation from Syracuse Town Manager Henry DeJulia concerning improving infrastructure and attracting business to those areas.

The board also set in motion ways for board of zoning appeals decisions to be attached to deeds to provide more information, such as variations, for potential buyers of land.

Finally, the board looked over an ordinance dealing with wind towers and the language included in that ordinance. The board approved a requirement for an exception for all areas seeking to use wind towers.

The board also elected its officers and approved the minutes from December's meeting.
