Someone's been dumping junk on county property near Dewart Lake, and the Kosciusko County Health Department is working to find out who.

Monday, a spokeswoman for the KCHD said someone has been dumping tires, glass and metal rubbish on the property for some time. "It's quite a bit on a small stretch of land," she said.

She asked the commissioners if she finds out who the culprit is, if they want her to send a letter to the person to stop the dumping.

"They should stop it, yes," said Avis Gunter, commissioner.

The commissioners approved a letter to the suspect as soon as the Health Department knows who it is.

Also approved was the bid for a new wheel loader for the county highway department to replace a 1974 model. The bid approved was from McDonald Machinery Co. for $142,850, minus a $6,000 allowed trade-in deduction.

Rob Ladson, highway department engineer and superintendent, made the recommendation.

He also presented to the commissioners the bridge 90 project on Old Road 30W, over Walnut Creek, which the commissioners approved. The bridge will be cleaned, reinforced and repainted. Ladson said work on the project will begin in late summer or early fall. Notices to local property owners have been sent.

In another matter, Kosciusko County Sheriff Aaron Rovenstine told the commissioners he has applied for a grant for two more officers through the Homeland Security grant program. Also available through Homeland Security is a grant for $100,000 to pay for officer overtime in case of an event. It's a matching grant, so if the county receives it, the county will have to pay 25 percent.

Rovenstine said he doesn't know if the county will get the grant, but Rep. Mark Souder wrote a letter supporting it.

"I'm all in favor of it," said Ed Rock, emergency management director for the county.

In other business, the commissioners:

• Approved the Kosciusko Area Bus Service's operational budget for the first quarter of the year.

• Approved the lease agreement with Plain Township for another five years.

• Approved hearing the nonprofit organization presentations for the 2004 budget at their second meeting in June.

County commissioners are Brad Jackson, northern district; Ron Truex, middle district; and Avis Gunter, southern district. Their regular meetings are at 9 a.m. in the county courthouse every other Tuesday. [[In-content Ad]]
