County Jobs

I am an elected township assessor. I was elected by the taxpayers of my township to serve a four-year term. This is my third year so I have one more year left.

A year ago the state decided to get rid of township assessors. The county assessor had a choice to keep us or not. In our county she kept two township assessors and decided to get rid of the other two. Well, I am one of the ones she kicked out on the streets. The county council backed her up on this decision. They left me without any income, no health insurance and I don't qualify for unemployment. I am not old enough to get my Social Security or my PERF, which is a public retirement fund that I have put into for 20 years.

It is very difficult to get a job in this economy, so I am left to face each month not sure if we will make ends meet. But I do know that by the grace of God we will.

What I would like to say to the county employees: You should be down on your knees thanking God that you do have a job and you do have health insurance and you will have a paycheck. Oh, sure it will be less, but be thankful you do realize that the council could have decided to do away with positions and then you would be just like me. Instead of complaining, especially in this day and age, you should be thanking the council.
