County honors Hobbs for valor

MILFORD - For his actions in the line of duty, Milford Town Marshal Dave Hobbs will be presented with a plaque and a medal of valor.
Bob Morrison, an officer with the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department and member of the American Legion, told the Milford Town Council Monday that Hobbs needed to be recognized. On June 26 at 7 p.m. in the commissioners' room in the Kosciusko County courthouse, Warsaw, Hobbs will be presented with a plaque. The KCSD also will present Hobbs with a medal for valor.
Since Hobbs was a former marine, Morrison said, there will be Marines represented there as well as residents from Peabody Retirement Home, who will sing patriotic songs.
"One of the bravest things I've ever seen," said Morrison. "It could have been a funeral we're going to. I want to fill (the room) up. What he did was amazing."
On May 27, Criss Duncan, 43, of Shipshewana, and Ralph Berkey Jr., 34, Elkhart, using military-style rifles, allegedly robbed the Leesburg branch of National City Bank of approximately $44,000. The two reportedly fled the bank and were seen driving away from the bank in a van.
Shortly after the alleged robbers fled the bank, they switched to a pickup, which was spotted by Hobbs. Hobbs approached the vehicle on foot to question the driver as to whether he had seen the van. Hobbs then reportedly saw a passenger in the pickup squatting on the pickup's floor and allegedly holding a rifle pointed at Hobbs.
Hobbs and the suspects reportedly exchanged fire, with Hobbs' patrol car being damaged by bullets.
Duncan and Berkey were taken into custody May 31.
Morrison said he wants to know how many Milford people will be there so seats can be reserved as there is limited seating. He told them to contact him at the sheriff's department when they know.
The ceremony is open to the public.
Later in the town council meeting, council chairman John Lehman presented Hobbs with a plaque from the town for his 25 years of dedicated service.
"We think you've done a good job," Lehman said, especially with the Leesburg bank robbery.
Lehman said, "The only thing you need to improve on is your golf." [[In-content Ad]]
