County GIS Moving To New Web Site

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

The first month of 2008 will bring a new look to Kosciusko County's geographic information mapping Web site.

Kosciusko County GIS Director Bill Holder said his department plans to migrate the site to a new format this week, and education sessions are scheduled to teach the public how to use the new system. The new mapping system is called Beacon. It was created by the Schneider Corp., Indianapolis, the same company that created the county's current GIS Web site.[[In-content Ad]]Holder said Whitley County uses a Beacon GIS system, along with as many as 14 other Indiana counties. He said 92 counties throughout the Midwest use the Beacon system.

"We were getting to the point where we were going to have to migrate our current site to new technology," Holder said. "It would have been more expensive to redevelop the whole site. This is a much cheaper alternative for us."

Holder said migrating to the Beacon system will cost the county $4,000. He said when the county originally developed the current GIS site, it cost between $30,000 and $40,000. He estimated a redevelopment of the site could cost just as much as the original development.

Holder said the Beacon system costs less because the format has already been created and the migration will be a matter of plugging Kosciusko County's information into an existing system.

A link to the new Beacon site, Holder said, will likely be available on the county's web site, www.kcgov.com, later this week. A direct link to the Beacon Web site is http://beacon.schneidercorp.com?site=KosciuskoCountyIN

The current GIS site will be maintained for three months, Holder said, while the county brings the public up to speed on how to use the new site. The new system will offer capabilities that are not available on the current site, and the county will offer free training sessions on the use of the new system.

"These sessions will last an hour and will cover the basic functionality of the new GIS Web site," Holder said. "The training will also focus on the new functionality in Beacon that was not available on the current Web site. We'd welcome anybody who uses this on a frequent basis or anybody with interest to join the training."

The training sessions are scheduled for Jan. 23, 9 a.m.; Jan. 30, 2 p.m.; Feb. 6, 2 p.m.; and Feb. 13, 9 a.m. All training sessions will take place in the Kosciusko County Justice Building Basement Training Room.
