Kosciusko County Commissioners approved a contract during its meeting Tuesday morning for $168,553 to repair a bridge.

The bridge, located on Winona Beach Road near Warsaw, will be repaired by Beer and Slabaugh.

County Highway Superintendent Scott Tilden said the bid was the lowest received and came in $49,000 under the engineer’s estimate.

The highway department will open bids for two bridge projects in Winona Lake during the commissioners’ meeting May 22.

Work on the Winona Beach Road bridge is expected to start in the next two weeks.

Tilden, along with county attorney Mike Miner, opened three bids for a new dump truck for the highway department.

Tilden will give his recommendation on who to award the bid to at the commissioners’ May 8 meeting.

Contract and Health Insurance Approved

The commissioners approved a three-year contract with McAllister Power System  for $3,178.

County Administrator Ron Robinson told the commissioners the company is in charge of the county buildings’ generator maintenance.

Robinson also received approval to renew the county’s medical insurance with Sun Life. They also renewed a contract with Creative Benefit Solutions who serves as the county’s consultant on insurance matters.

In an effort to stem rising healthcare costs, the county approved an agreement with MedStat to be a clinic for county employees as well as Cardinal Services employees.

Robinson said that for it to be most cost effective, the county needed to hit a threshold of 1,000 recipients. That led to the partnership with Cardinal Services.

“A lot of counties around the state have done this,” said Robinson. “It will give us relief on workmen’s compensation as well.”

Robinson couldn’t provide a figure on how much health insurance for county employees would cost, but said with the changes the percentage increase was expected to be in single digits.

Clerk’s Account Adds Security
Kosciusko County Clerk Jason McSherry asked the commissioners to allow added security features for his department’s bank account. A fraudulent $10 check was cashed out of the account. The cost for the added security measures are $35 a month and would mean an upgrade to the same security features other county departments have.

Fire Association Grant
Kosciusko County Emergency Management Director Ed Rock got approval from the commissioners to apply for a grant on behalf of the Kosciusko County Firemen’s Association for $568,000. The grant will be hosted by the Warsaw/Wayne Township Fire Territory. If awarded, the grant recipient will have to pay 10 percent of the grant.

In other business, Matt Boren, from Kosciusko County Bus Service, presented claims to the commissioners in the amount of $132,000.

Ty Marshall, from American Bikers Aimed Toward Education, told the commissioners that May is Motorcycle Awareness Month. The commissioners approved a proclamation for it.

Work was started Tuesday on the west side of the county’s courthouse. An inspection found considerable damage and a large separation in the roof. That caused water to run into the building.[[In-content Ad]]
