Adams said the assessor, auditor and treasurer's offices have worked hard to comply with the newly enacted tax law passed by the state legislature. However, various state agencies that are charged with the implementation of the changes have issued rules that will prevent Kosciusko County from issuing the provisional tax bill in a timely manner.[[In-content Ad]]According to a press release from Adams' office, Kosciusko County had published the legal notice as required and was proceeding to return closer to a normal tax year schedule as outlined in a March 13 news release to the Kosciusko County Council.
"Now we find out we cannot do this and it is disappointing as the schools, cities, towns, townships and libraries who receive these local property tax funds will not receive their normal June distribution to meet their needs and obligations for the services they provide," Adams said.
He said this means these governmental entities may have to borrow monies that could result in increased taxes for property tax owners.
Adams said the public may come to the treasurer's office and pay whatever they wish to pay ahead, which would be credited on the subsequent tax bill. Adams said this would help avoid the borrowing of funds by the local governmental units.
According to the press release, when all required data and state approval is in place, an announcement will be made regarding the due dates.
