County catches error in tax notices

July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.

County officials stopped the mailing of some property tax notices today after township assessor Ben McKrill brought an error on some of the forms to the attention of the Kosciusko County Council Thursday.

The notices, called Form 11s, let property owners know the assessed value of their property. McKrill is the trustee/assessor for Clay Township. He said some of the notices for his township listed the previous assessment as 2002-pay-2003 instead of the correct year, 2006-pay-2007.[[In-content Ad]]In some cases, McKrill said if the incorrect forms went out, taxpayers could be confused about the accuracy of their assessed value.

"When they get these, they're going to be up in the air," McKrill said. "My name's on it and that's who they're going to call."

Council President Harold Jones and County Commissioner Ron Truex visited the county assessor's office to inquire about the situation this morning.

"There was a mistake and it's been fixed," Truex said.

County Assessor Laurie Renier said some of the forms were incorrect due to an error in instructions from the company which provides the software to produce the forms. She said the forms will be corrected before they are sent out.

Renier said there is no deadline set for the forms to be mailed. She said her office was working to correct the forms with the error before mail goes out today.

Most of the Form 11s will be mailed today, some may be mailed Monday.

In other news, the council appointed three people to the board of directors for the newly formed Lakeland Regional Sewer District. The sewer district will include property south of Armstrong Road and CR 500N; west of Ind. 13; north of South Barbee Road; east of CR 650E; north of McKenna Road and CR 400N; east of CR 457E. The district is located around lakes in the Barbee chain, including Kuhn, Big Barbee, Little Barbee, Irish, Sechrist, Sawmill, Banning and Shoe.

Dave Doctor, North Webster, headed up the work to have the district established. In March, Indiana Department of Environmental Management Commissioner Thomas Easterly signed an order to create the sewer district.

Doctor told the council the next step is to assemble a board of directors, which will include four members appointed by the county commissioners and three council appointees.

Doctor suggested the council appoint Councilman Bob Sanders, Jim Haney and Stewart Lambert, both of Leesburg.

April 1, the commissioners appointed Kosciusko County Health Department Administrator/Chief Environmental Scientist Bob Weaver, David Tyler, Leesburg, and Dan Lee, Warsaw, to the board.
