County Approves New Long Distance Carrier
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
Kosciusko County's current long distance carrier just isn't up to par.
Monday, Kosciusko County Administrator Ron Robinson told the county commissioners the county has had a problem with the carrier for a while and recommended the county change to First Communications for long-distance service. The switch will save the county money.
"We're not happy with what we're seeing with the costs" with the current carrier, he said.
However, the change the commissioners approved will not be immediate. Robinson also told the commissioners the county has been paying for phone lines no longer in service. He and county auditor Sue Ann Mitchell will work on finding out which lines the county still has before making the switch.
The county also will switch the central dispatch system contract to Integrated Data Systems. The company the county formerly held a contract with went out of business and Integrated Data Systems picked up their business.
Robinson reported the county got the medical insurance rates back last week and they will be going up. For a single plan, the rates will increase $10.75 per month and approximately $31 for a family plan. To keep the same benefits for the county's employees, these were the best rates.
"We've been hit hard the last two years," he said, because one county employee had cancer and another had a kidney transplant.
The insurance rates were approved.
In other business, the county commissioners:
• Approved the change of names to two streets in Atlantis Villas, off Old Road 30, Warsaw. The names were originally spelled incorrectly and include changing the name Santorina Drive to Santorini Drive and Creete Drive to Crete Drive.
• Approved for Kosciusko County Highway Superintendent and Engineer Rob Ladson to sign a permit for trees to be cut down in the road right of way at Palestine Lake.
• Approved to accept the roads in Maxwelton Hills Subdivision for county maintenance.
• Approved the operational and capital budgets, vouchers and year-end report for Kosciusko Area Bus Service.
• Robinson reported the Justice Building project is moving ahead "quite fast." Circuit and Superior I courts should be moved back by Nov. 12, he said, as well as the addition of a receptionist area. The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department should be back in its old quarters by late December.
• Approved the 2003 county holidays and commissioners' meeting dates. Also approved was the county employees' Christmas party for Dec. 17.
The swearing-in of elected officials will be Dec. 17 at 11 a.m. in the county courthouse.
• Mitchell presented the commissioners with maps of cable provider MediaCom's coverage area. Commissioner Avis Gunter previously requested the maps.
Gunter said the company's contract with the county is up for renewal next year and "some people have been very unhappy with the service they've been getting."
The commissioners deemed the map incomplete, however, and asked Mitchell to write the company and get a more complete map of Mediacom's coverage area.
• Approved vacating part of Enterprise Drive, south of Warsaw, off Country Club Drive.
• Signed the Eli Lilly Road vacation ordinance.
Kosciusko County commissioners are Avis Gunter, Ron Truex and Brad Jackson. They meet at 9 a.m. in the county courthouse, Warsaw, every other Tuesday. [[In-content Ad]]
