County Approves Highway Supply Bids

Highway Superintendent Scott Tilden recommended accepting all bids, which are for materials such as dust control, aggregate, weed spray and fuel. He said the department will choose suppliers based on lowest responsible bid, as usual, and on considerations such as proximity to road projects in the case of suppliers like stone quarries.
He also presented two letters to be sent to the Indiana Department of Transportation – a right of way certification and an insurance requirement – in preparation for receiving federal Highway Safety Improvement Program funds. Kosciusko County’s share of the $725,000 to be split with Elkhart County will be used to replace about 2,000 to 2,200 signs that have faded with age, Tilden said.
Also this morning, commissioners voted to table a request for vacation of a public right of way in a Tippecanoe Township neighborhood on Kuhn Lake. The request would cut in half a 20-foot-wide, 50-foot-long lake access and drainage path established years ago but since grown over with weeds.
The request would only receive the recommendation of the Area Plan Commission if all nearby property owners agreed, Plan Director Dan Richard said.
But neighbor Pat Meck spoke at the meting to object, saying he and other property owners would agree to the vacation only if given concessions such as the chance to have a community pier built at the end of the path. An existing private pier was ordered removed by then-county Circuit Court Judge Rex Reed about 10 years ago to comply with the state Department of Natural Resources.
Questions emerged in the ensuing discussion over whether the DNR would allow a community pier to be built and if 10 or 20 feet would be wide enough to allow it. Commissioners agreed to give Meck until the Dec. 2 meeting to find out before making a decision.[[In-content Ad]]
