The Kosciusko County Council approved several salary ordinance amendments and the hiring of new personnel at its monthly meeting Thursday night.
Kosciusko County Sheriff Rocky Goshert told the council that Lt. Steve Knispel is retiring after 31 years.
Goshert asked the council’s permission to hire another deputy.
The new hire won’t take Knispel’s position and Goshert said that for the time being nobody within the sheriff’s department would fill Knispel’s position.
County administrator Ron Robinson told the council that Nanette Newland, who has served as a human resources specialist with the county for 15 years, has decided to retire.
Prior to working in human resources, Newland spent many years as a court reporter with the county.
Newland will retire shortly after July 4. Robinson said he has a new person ready to start June 20 and needed the council to approve hiring that person in at $17.89 an hour.
Robinson said the new hire has a background in dealing with insurance which he said was a plus.
Prosecuting Attorney Dan Hampton told the council that a member of his staff, Jane Ciriello asked to move to part-time.
That creates a need for a part-time secretary one day a week.
The council approved hiring a part-time secretary.
The council also approved a transfer request by Hampton of $1,400 from a secretary/paralegal fund to a part-time fund.
Judge James Jarrette requested a salary ordinance amendment for the probation department.
Former chief probation officer Ron Babcock resigned several weeks ago and his replacement, Tammy Johnson, needed to have her salary adjusted to the state-mandated rate.
Johnson currently makes $58,940 a year and will move to $62,833 a year.
That will push her bi-weekly salary from $2,266.92 to $2,455.12.
Jarrette said that Johnson’s job will be filled internally by a juvenile probation officer moving to an adult probation officer role. That juvenile position may not be filled for several months Jarrette said.
Ed Rock, Emergency Management Director, was approved an additional appropriation of $6,000.
Rock said it was needed to cover hazardous materials training conducted.
The money doesn’t come from tax dollars, said Rock, but instead fees collected from companies when they file training material paperwork.
The council approved the filing of annual tax abatement reports by the following companies:
– G.I. Tape & Label
– Bradican Real Estate Partnership
– Thornburgh Family L.P.
– NG Instruments
– North Central LP
– Biomet
– Maple Leaf Farms
– Louis Dreyfus
– Custom Engineered Wheels
– Cass Holdings
The approval wasn’t for tax abatements themselves but to attest to the accuracy of the reports as well as making sure they meet filing deadline.
The council will next meet July 14 at 7 p.m. in the old courtroom at the old courthouse.
Council members are Doug Heinisch, John Kinsey, Larry Teghtmeyer, Tom Anglin, Brad Tandy, Bob Sanders and Jim Moyer.[[In-content Ad]]
