Councilman Brad Tandy said the wage committee recommends allowing Renier to hire 10 new positions, including four supervisors, for her office.[[In-content Ad]]Tandy said the 10 new employees will help the assessor's office organize to carry out assessment duties in the absence of 43 full- and part-time township assessors and deputies whose assessing duties will be terminated July 1.
Renier said she thinks the 10 new employees will be enough.
"I've done a time and staff study," Renier told the council. "What I've got here I think will be adequate."
Tandy said the change will save the county money. "There will be significant savings to the county," he told the council. "It should be in multiples of hundreds of thousands."
The council approved the request for new employees 5-0 with Councilwoman Charlene Knispel abstaining. Knispel, a former Kosciusko County assessor, said she wants more information about HB 1001 and the options it allows the county before she votes on a hiring plan.
"I just didn't want to vote on something until we know if it's the right number of people we need," Knispel said.
Renier said she has scheduled a meeting with all township assessors and other county officials to discuss the transfer of duties. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday at 8:30 a.m. in the Old Courtroom.
In other news, the council approved capital projects funds for three local libraries. The council approved $22,197 for Bell Memorial Library, Mentone; and $172,035 for Warsaw Community Public Library. Milford Community Library requested to spend the funds that they have, and did not ask for a tax levy.
