COLUMBIA CITY – Cordelia May Browning, 88, of Pierceton, died at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 12, 2011, in Miller’s Merry Manor, Columbia City.

She was born Feb. 7, 1923, in Chicago, Ill., to Drue Dresher and Forest Ethel Denlinger Funderburg. On Aug. 24, 1941, in Elgin, Ill., she married Paul William Browning, who survives.

She graduated from Elgin High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Ball State University. She moved to Muncie in 1954, and in 1978 she moved to the family farm south of North Webster. In 2004 she moved into Timbercrest Retirement Center, North Manchester, until 2010, when she returned to their farm. She was a homemaker and an elementary school teacher for several years. She supported Heifer International, Smile Train and Habitat for Humanity for many years. Her memberships included Union Grove Church of the Brethren, Eaton, and North Webster Church of the Brethren.

Also surviving are five children, Pamela Dee Shreves,  Rita May Breedlove and P. David (and spouse Debbie) Browning, all of Muncie, and Kay Lynn (and spouse Jerome) Sponseller and Kathleen “Kathy” Diane Browning, all of Pierceton; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister and infant twin sons.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at North Webster Church of the Brethren with Pastor Robert Wyman officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Union Cemetery, Eaton.

Calling is from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at Union Grove Church of the Brethren, Eaton, and from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at North Webster Church of the Brethren.

DeMoney-Grimes Countryside Funeral Home, Columbia City, is in charge of arrangements.
