A traffic accident that sent a semi-tractor-trailer driver to the hospital is being investigated this morning due to unusual circumstances surrounding the incident.

Sampson L. Chambers, 38, of Salisbury, N.C., reportedly fell asleep while driving a semi-tractor trailer on U.S. 30E early Saturday morning. Chambers was westbound in the semi around 4:18 a.m. when he fell asleep, drifting off the north side of the U.S. 30, 1,200 feet east of Van Ness Road. He then reportedly overcorrected, causing the tractor-trailer to roll on its side and come to rest across the westbound lanes of U.S. 30.

Chambers crawled out of the cab and into another vehicle, where he waited for medical attention. Chambers was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital and then airlifted to Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, where he was treated then released for injuries to his hip and neck.

When police arrived, they learned that Chambers reportedly was driving on a suspended license and that the trailer had been listed as stolen.

The contents of the overturned trailer were loaded into another trailer, and the crashed semi and trailer were taken to Crouse Body Shop along with the reloaded trailer, where they were secured in the lot.

This morning, drug-sniffing dogs were at Crouse Body Shop to investigate the trailer and its contents. The trailer allegedly contains a load of antacid samples from a pharmaceutical company.

Chambers, who reportedly was at the body shop this morning during the investigation, allegedly has been arrested for trafficking in the past.

The incident remains under investigation by the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department.
