Cooper, Warsaw Golfers Sink Squires
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
Dorey Bungitak, standing several yards away, raised her arms like referees do for made field goals and shouted, "It went in!"
"No way," Ashley Cooper said. "Are you lying?"
No, Bungitak wasn't, and yes, Cooper's 165-yard shot with a five-iron at the third hole at Rozella Ford Golf Course somehow, some way rolled right into the cup.
On this day, individuals named Bungitak and Cooper and April Turner highlighted Thursday's match between Manchester and Warsaw on a sunny, warm September afternoon. Warsaw improved to 13-1 by beating 6-3 Manchester 191-210.
You had Cooper's miraculous shot for par on the third hole, a par-5 hole.
You had Manchester's Bungitak tearing up Rozella, shooting a 40, the best score against Warsaw in a nine-hole match at the Tigers' home course this year. Nothing new for Bungitak, who already holds Manchester's record for best score in an 18-hole match - and she's a sophomore.
Any other day, Turner could have been the story. Golfing in the fourth slot in Warsaw's lineup, she shot her best score at Rozella Ford, 45, to lead all the Tigers, Cooper included. Cooper settled for a 47.
But this day was Cooper's day, Cooper's shot. Warsaw coach Bob Turner wasn't at the third hole when she drained it, but he heard about how she shot it from next to the tree on the hill after the small dip before you get to the last house on the course.
He drove his golf cart over to the spot, drove back and announced: "One hundred sixty-five yards. That's the best shot ever by any girl I've coached. I've coached for 10 years and never had a girl have a shot like that.
"Anytime you hit one like that, face it, you have luck on your side. But you have to have a little talent, too, to hit a shot like that."
Asked if it was the best shot of her life, Cooper said: "Yes."
Things only looked to get better for Cooper. As she walked on the third green to pluck her ball out of the cup, she noticed a guy with a television camera standing at the third hole. He was taping part of the match for Warsaw's Channel 4. Not only did she make this 165-yard shot, she also had this man catch it on tape.
Maybe.
Then again, maybe not.
"Did you get that?" she asked him.
"No," he said. "I didn't have it turned on."
"That's happened to me before," Cooper said. "I made a 20-foot putt earlier this year when (Channel 4) was here, and it was turned off then, too."
The shot came at a perfect time for Cooper, a senior who had been scuffling. Just minutes before, she had sliced a couple of shots to the right into the trees.
"It gave me par," she said. "I needed it, too. I was playing so bad."
While Cooper had her ups and downs, Bungitak stayed steady all the way through. Her worst score on any hole was at the third hole, when she fired a six.
When Bungitak walked into the clubhouse afterward, she looked over some stat sheets and immediately announced to Manchester coach Keri Nichols, "You owe me five pops."
"For every three putt, they owe me a pop," Nichols explained. "For every birdie or par, I owe them a pop. I don't think any of us will ever pay up, but hopefully, it's a motivator."
The motivator for Cooper is Warsaw's school record. She set it earlier this year at Sycamore Golf Club, 38 over nine holes.
"I'm trying to break my own school record," she said.
So if she could choose, which would she take? This 165-yard shot, or another school record?
"The school record," she said.
