Second District Democratic Congressional candidate Brendan Mullen was in Warsaw Monday evening to talk to a group of local democrats.

Mullen, a South Bend native, graduated from West Point where he played football  then later served overseas as a combat engineer in South Korea.

He went on to serve in Operation Iraqi Freedom near Mosul, Iraq.

Mullen is currently the owner of an information technology company.

Monday night, Mullen engaged a roomful of democrats at Richard’s Restaurant and talked to them about his run to replace Rep. Joe Donnelly (D-South Bend).

Donnelly is hoping for the democratic nomination to run against Sen. Richard Lugar in this year’s general election.

“I’m running against a career politician, a career parade goer,” said Mullen of his presumed opponent Jackie Walorski.

Mullen focused on job growth during his discussion Monday night.

“With everyone focused on jobs, jobs, jobs, we have to grow the economy,” said Mullen. “And as a small business owner and job creator, I feel like I have the experience. It’s about fostering an environment for small business owners. The focus has shifted too much on the interest of large corporations.”

Mullen was joined Monday night by his father, Pete Mullen, who is the current St. Joseph County auditor.

Mullen said that his father and others who are growing older need to be taken care of.

Mullen said some tough decisions need to be made with things like Social Security, but the country needs to “keep its promises” to those who have paid into Social Security for so long.

He did acknowledge though that changes needed to be made as Social Security is estimated to be insolvent by 2037.

Mullen said his campaign is building strength, noting that he raised the most money in the third quarter of any democrat in the state.

He also said it was important to get his message out that he’s sick of party politics.

“I don’t care if it’s a red idea, or if it’s a blue idea, if it’s a good idea I’m for it,” said Mullen.

Regarding President Barack Obama’s healthcare bill, Mullen said he had some issues with the bill but took exception with those who wish to repeal it.

He said despite its flaws, the bill now has insured 2.6 million Americans who were formerly uninsured.

The discussion of Right To Work was a key topic Monday night.

Mullen said the legislation at the state level is a purely political move.

“This is what I believe is Mitch Daniels’ victory lap,” said Mullen.

Mullen said he felt the republicans’ push for Right To Work will help democrats in 2012.
