Confused

Editor, Times-Union:

Being unemployed for nearly two months now, I have lots of time to read the Times-Union front to back. In Saturday's News Views, Gary Gerard cites the Washington Post as stating that Senator John McCain opposes the bill that would reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The Associated Press article directly below News Views states that Senator McCain is in favor of "Mandatory Reductions In Green House Gases." Huh?

One can only conclude that one article is incorrect, or Mr. McCain is confused. Assuming the latter to be the case, Mr. McCain seems to be confused about a number of issues. He was against the Bush tax cuts before he was for them. He was for campaign finance reform before he was against it. He says he's the enemy of special interests, but his campaign staff is rife with lobbyists. He claims to be a friend to veterans but opposes legislation to benefit them. On a recent trip to Iraq, he seemed confused about the difference between Sunni and Shia.

On to page three. Rep. Mark Souder is in a snit over the Democrats' budget resolution. Rep. Souder cites overspending as one of the reasons he disagrees with it. I find it curious that conservatives have no problem with spending money if it furthers the cause of corporate welfare or billionaire socialism. The sky's the limit for spending on the abyss called Iraq, even though billions have disappeared into thin air because of no oversight and lack of accountability. But if a budget includes anything to benefit the poor or middle classes, workers, consumers, veterans or children, it is considered bloated and irresponsible spending.

In his column, Mr. Gerard seems puzzled as to why liberals hate W so much since they both like to spend. I hope my brief explanation will help to clear things up for him a bit.
