DUNLAP - There was a reason Concord's swimmers went 6-0 in the Northern Lakes Conference this season, and they backed it up by placing first in Saturday's NLC Championships.

They are the best girls swim team, so that they placed first shocked no one.

"The way things were seeded going in," Warsaw girls swim coach Eric Mohler said, "everything came out like it was expected."

Concord won with 333 points, easily outdistancing Goshen, which took second with 242. Plymouth took third with 200 and was followed by Northridge (160), Warsaw (135), NorthWood (125) and Wawasee (109).

Warsaw, 8-4 overall, went 3-3 in NLC dual meets, placing the Tigers fifth. By taking fifth in the championship meet, the Tigers did not drop off.

"I was happy for fifth," Mohler said. "Last year we were seventh. I'm happy we beat NorthWood and Wawasee. We moved up two spots."

The top six individuals were placed in the finals, while places six through 12 battled in the consolation round.

Senior Katie Beehler led the way for Warsaw, taking second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.42 and fourth in the 100 individual medley with a time of 2:21.74.

One other Tiger cracked the top six. Junior Jaci Thallemer placed sixth in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:55.44.

"Katie ended up where she was seeded in both events," Mohler said. "We had other girls who did well compared to what they swam before.

"Laura Noggle in the 200 and 500 freestyles. She took 10th in the 200 and eighth in the 500. She's been dropping time all year. She has seen her hard work in practice pay off. Sarah Cook. We put her in the 500 freestyle for the first time this year. She dropped two seconds off her time and took 11th. Clair Beckett in the 50 freestyle dropped more than half a second off her time to place 11th."

NorthWood came away with two first places, sophomore Julia Warnken in the 100 butterfly (59.60 seconds) and 200 individual medley (2:10.98). Warnken set the pool record in the 200 individual medley, eclipsing her previous record of 2:11.61, set in 1999.

Wawasee competed in the individual finals in three events. Junior Jenna Rantz placed second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:15.85. Senior Laura Karns placed fourth in the 50 freestyle (25.70 seconds) and 100 freestyle (57.46 seconds).
