In the grand scheme of things, however, the Concord Minutemen had more to cheer about.
With a 3-2 win over the host Tigers, Concord snapped Warsaw’s winning streak against Northern Lakes Conference opponents at 13.
Warsaw fell to 9-5 overall and 6-1 in the NLC, while the Minutemen improved to 11-4 and 6-1.
Monday’s setback was the Tigers’ first conference loss since falling to Concord in 2011.
“No doubt, Concord was the better team tonight,” said Warsaw coach Rick Orban. “On one hand, I’m extremely proud of Evan Miller. He’s had a great career. It was nice to see him win on Senior Night, and Concord has a talented No. 3 singles player.
“And the No. 1 doubles team, to win two tiebreaker sets, that’s stupendous,” continued Orban. “But it was a matter of focus tonight. We just didn’t have it and we lost to a better team.”
Though the team outcome was already decided, as Concord had secured three points by winning at No. 1 and 2 singles and No. 2 doubles, Schlitt and Petro defeated Aaron Allen and Mitch Boyer 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (12-10).
Miller scored the Tigers’ other point, beating Jared Searer 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
But as proud as Orban was of winning on those two courts, the veteran coach was disappointed in the overall loss.
“Yes, I expected to win,” said Orban. “I expect to win every match, that’s just the way I am. “Concord was bound and determined to end our NLC streak. We should have been just as determined to continue it. I thought we were lethargic.”
At No. 1 singles, Concord’s Nick Pollock beat Sam Rice 6-4, 6-1.
At No. 2 singles, foreign exchange student Bernardo Cadario topped Warsaw’s Kyle Wettschurack 6-1, 6-3.
And at No. 2 doubles, the Minutemen’s duo of Riley Huffer and Mitchell Lozier defeated Nic Jansen and Justin Stout 6-3, 6-4.
“We had a talk before the match tonight about what this match meant,” said Orban. “But we didn’t move our feet and the energy level wasn’t there. It was a matter of focus. The way we had been playing, granted against lesser competition, I wanted us to come out and play like that. We just didn’t have it tonight.”
With the loss, Warsaw, Concord and Plymouth all go into Wednesday’s first round of the NLC Tournament at Plymouth with 6-1 records.
A year ago, the Tigers were 7-0 against NLC opponents and won the conference tournament.
Though he was disappointed in the way his team played against Concord Monday, Orban made it clear he still believes the Tigers are the team to beat.
“Are we still the team to beat, sure,” said Orban. “Anytime you’re the defending champion, you’re the team to beat. There’s got to be a certain amout of pride. We need to come out Wednesday and prove we’re the team to beat.”
