Dunlap - With Halloween just three days away, Concord football coach Tim Dawson reached into his bag of tricks and pulled out a Minutemen treat, a 62-yard reverse by junior wideout Jeremy Lugbill to defeat Wawasee 30-27 in Class 4A Sectional 11 second-round play Friday evening.

The fourth quarter of this classic resembled a mad dash to the department store to grab a new Sony Play Station 2 as the game was full of uneasiness and excitement.

"We knew coming into this one that it was going to be difficult," Dawson said. "We thought that we had to get four scores or 30 points to win."

Wawasee had fought an uphill battle, ever since the opening kickoff, to take the lead 27-22 on quarterback Brent Doty's scoring strike to senior wide receiver Travis Klenke. Klenke found himself lined up against no Concord defender, waved his arm to Doty, then did the rest in going for the leading score.

Concord started out on its 25-yard line, made a first down on a Nick Matney 2-yard run, then set up the play of the season for the Minutemen. Lugbill took a pitch on an end reverse then found Wawasee linebacker Sam Calobrace awaiting. Lugbill side-stepped the would-be defender then raced the 62 yards to the Warrior 3-yard line.

The Warriors almost got the break they had wished for as Concord quarterback Ian Nelson fumbled the exchange from center but was able to recover. Concord took full advantage and took the lead for good on

Minutemen running back Nick Matney's third touchdown of the evening came from three yards out.

"They had one more big play (reverse) than we did," Wawasee head coach Joe Rietveld said. "I don't consider this (loss) a consolation."

Wawasee appeared sluggish in the first half as it gained only 16 total yards on just nine plays compared to 193 yards on 39 plays for Concord.

"We gave them a short field in the first half," Rietveld said. "The lack of offensive production hurt us. They have four all-conference players and you can't do that and expect to win against a team with talented players."

Wawasee found themselves trailing at intermission 15-0 and desperately seeking some relatively quick answers.

The Warriors countered, coming out of halftime, using a no-huddle offense.

"I told our guys to play hard and play as a team," Rietveld said. "We used the no-huddle because we needed a jump start mentally."

Wawasee arose from the dead to drive 59 yards using eight plays in just 1:51 culminated by a Jimmy Meyer three yard run to cut the score to 15-6 as the two-point conversion failed. That was the first of three touchdowns on the evening for Meyer.

"I was afraid they were going to start giving the ball to that hog (Meyer)," Dawson said. "He is just a good player."

That 260-pound "hog" gained 115 yards in the second half alone on just 15 carries.

Another scoring drive for Wawasee, this time 55 yards in six plays, cut the lead to 15-13. Meyer again did the honors, this time from 22 yards out on a fourth down-and-two yards to go situation.

"Meyer was able to pick up his feet a little more this evening," Rietveld said. "He was hot and we were feeding him the ball.

Concord answered the call to up the lead to 22-13 on a Nelson keeper from the 1-yard line.

Wawasee found itself at the Concord 18-yard line on a second down and five yards to go situation when Doty made a mental mistake. Doty tried to force the ball and was intercepted by Concord linebacker Mike Tepe.

"We ask so much of (Doty)," Rietveld said. "He made one bad decision. I asked him what he should have done, and he said to throw the ball out of bounds. Brent is his best coach because he is harder on himself than anyone."

Wawasee held Concord on three downs and forced a punt. Klenke returned the punt 27 yards to the Concord 11, where Dawson's worst Halloween nightmare, "that hog" Meyer, did the honors on the next play from scrimmage to cut the lead to 22-20.

Wawasee had one last-gasp effort with a little more than a minute remaining and the ball on its 15 yard-line, but Doty's pass was intercepted by C.J. Shafer to seal the win for Concord.

"We responded, and those are the things necessary to get to the championship," Dawson said. "The kids will enjoy this and then get fired up next week."

There will be no next week for Wawasee as it finished the 2000 season at 4-7. Concord will move on to face Northern Lakes Conference rival Goshen next week in Dunlap. Goshen advanced to the Class 4A Sectional 11 championship game as a result of beating South Bend Adams.

Notes: Wawasee's win total of four doubled last season. The Doty to Klenke touchdown was the 22nd of the season for the junior quarterback.

... This was the third consecutive game Wawasee allowed more than 200 yards rushing and the eighth time in 11 games this season.

... Doty finished the season with 2,084 yards passing. Meyer finished the season with 451 yards rushing, including two 100-yard games.

... Luke Speakman led the team with 51 tackles. Justin Magid registered four sacks on the 2000 season. Bobby Likens finished the season with 68 catches for 798 yards, while Klenke led the Warriors with 11 touchdowns.
