Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Jeff Shaw's name was unveiled on the 9/11 memorial Saturday outside Center Lake Pavilion.
Shaw was killed in a motor vehicle accident Nov. 12, 2009, while responding to a call on Ind. 14, 10 miles south of Warsaw near Silver Lake.Shaw's name joins those of four other local law enforcement who have died while serving in the line of duty.
Other names on the memorial are Harold Shepler, a former Warsaw Fire Department firefighter, who died in 1930; Joseph Bauer, a former Kosciusko County Sheriff's Dept. chief deputy, who died in 1954; Phillip Hochstetler, a former KCSD detective sergeant, who died in 1994; and Jason Beal, a former Indiana state trooper, who died in 2000.
Shaw's wife, Angie; her mother, Carolyn Young; Angie's children, Nickolas and Isabella; Shaw's brothers, Sam and Chris Shaw; Shaw's parents, Orlie and Beverly Shaw; and other family members attended Saturday's ceremony.
Family members of the local law enforcement whose names are on the memorial also attended.
Angie said her husband would have been honored to have his name placed on the memorial.
"All of the support from the sheriff's department and the community has been amazing and goes to show how everyone loved my husband and how much he meant to the community," Angie said.
Shaw's brothers, Sam and Chris, remembered their brother.
"Jeff would have been impressed with the memorial and those here to honor 9/11. He always took good care of his kids and wife and I think he would be pretty proud of today," Sam said.
Chris described Shaw as a loving and caring brother who loved to do things with his family and served the community in the best way he could.
Kosciusko County Sheriff Rocky Goshert said Shaw had qualities of commitment and character as those who fought to save lives in the 9/11 attacks.
"As we look back it was an honor and privilege to work with Shaw, and he was a person you could count on, and he loved his family and parents," Goshert said.
Also during the ceremony, Ed Rock, Kosciusko County emergency management director, sang the National Anthem; Ken Locke, Salvation Army community ministries director, gave a prayer; and Winona Lake Police Officer Brad Kellar sang "Amazing Grace".
Photos of the memorial were presented to Shaw's family. The colors were retired, and a 21-gun salute and "Taps" were performed.
Mike Cox, 9/11 committee co-chair, said the committee's goal has been to remind everyone that the U.S. was attacked on its soil. He said if that is remembered the U.S. will be able to be more vigilant and able to withstand future attacks.
A "Celebrate America-10 Years After" parade is being planned for Sept. 11, 2011.[[In-content Ad]]
