Communities Set Memorial Day Weekend Events
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
The annual Memorial Day services as conducted by the John C. Peterson American Legion Post 49 and James W. Sittler VFW Post 1126 will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Warsaw May 30.
Color guards, firing squad and other organizational units will form on Maple Avenue, just outside the cemetery gate. A march into the cemetery will begin at 11 a.m. Any units that want to participate should report at the gate by 10:30 a.m.
The program includes the playing of the national anthem by the Warsaw Community High School band, a memorial address by Maj. Gen. Robert Tanguy, R-USAF, roll call of deceased veterans and a flag-folding ceremony for deceased veterans.
When colors have been retired, the groups will proceed to the Grand Army of the Republic Circle and the new American Legion Circle where a simultaneous presentation of wreaths will be made by Auxiliary presidents of the Legion and the VFW. A firing squad will render a salute, followed by "Taps." The program ends at the original American Legion Circle where a wreath also will be presented along with a guard salute and "Taps."
In case of inclement weather, the program will be in the American Legion, North Buffalo Street. The annual celebration will begin at 1 p.m.
Mentone, May 29
Tanguy also will speak during Mentone's fourth annual Memorial Day observance May 29 at 2 p.m. A second speaker is National Guardsman Bruce Igo, who recently returned from service in Iraq.
The John C. Peterson color guard will participate in the ceremonies, along with the Tippecanoe Valley High School band, Mentone firemen, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Mentone American Legion Auxiliary Unit 425 members and Mentone veterans.
The parade will form at "the egg" at 1:30 p.m. and march to the Legion Circle in the cemetery.
The event is sponsored by the Auxiliary and the Chamber of Commerce. A reception and meal for participants will follow at the Little League building.
Pierceton, May 30
Pierceton's American Legion and Women's Auxiliary for Post 258 will begin Memorial Day services May 30 with an 11 a.m. parade starting at the middle school parking lot and ending in Brower Park. Featured speaker is Past 2nd District Commander Max Miller. There will be a salute to all the men and women who have fought and died in wars.
At 12:30 p.m., there is a carry-in dinner in the Legion's club room. All members and their families are invited.
At 2 p.m., there will be a joint installation, followed by memorial services for deceased members.
At 2:30 p.m., there will be live music.
North Webster, May 30
North Webster's American Legion Post 253 will lay several wreaths in memory of fallen servicemen and women the morning of May 30, beginning at Thorn Cemetery at 9:30 a.m.; Salem Cemetery at 9:45 a.m.; and Mock Cemetery at 10 a.m. The group will arrive at Post 253, Ind. 13S, at 10:30 a.m. to hold services in memory of those who died at sea.
At 10:45 a.m. the parade begins at the stop light downtown and proceeds to the North Webster Cemetery. At 11 a.m., a memorial service will be held in the cemetery.
Syracuse, May 30
Syracuse's American Legion and Women's Auxiliary Post 223 and other organizations will form a parade May 30, at 1:30 p.m. from the railroad crossing on Huntington Street to the Syracuse Cemetery on Main Street, where services will be observed.
Parade participants and the public are invited back to the post, 1806 S. Huntington St., for parade prizes and food. For more information, call the Legion, 574-457-3261, and ask for Tom or Lorree Corbat.
Dewart Lake Flotilla, May 29
The fourth annual Dewart Lake Memorial Day flotilla is May 29 at 2 p.m., with a rain date of May 30, also at 2 p.m. The boat parade will circle the lake in a clockwise direction, beginning in the bay next to the public access site.
This year boats may be decorated in any manner; the theme is at the owner's choosing. There will be a best entry award presented to whoever shows the best imagination, visual appearance and characterization of theme.
To compete, get a number from the Commodore's boat prior to the start of the flotilla. The number should be displayed on the shore side of the entry.

Bridge Dedication
A stone bridge recently installed on Rozella Ford Golf Course in Warsaw will be dedicated to the memory of the late Cyril "Tuffy" and the late Jane Rathbun May 28.
The structure, "Tuffy's Bridge," spans the creek on the No. 9 hole. The dedication ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. in the club house and will move to the bridge site. The event is hosted by the Rathbun's children and grandchildren.
Milford, May 30
Milford will host its Memorial Day parade May 30.

This year, the goal is to have 150 entries.
Entry information, including name, group or organization, mailing address, phone number, type of entry and number of entries, should be sent as soon as possible to: Dallas Winchester, 121 S. Main St., P.O. Box 300, Milford, IN 46542-0300.
Enter parade route off Ind. 15 on Emeline Street. The parade director will position entries at that time. Loading and unloading of transport equipment should use the Milford Elementary School parking lot on West Emeline Street.
