“The quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavor.” – Vince Lombardi
Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation is committed to student success through character education, leadership and literacy. One of the major components of character education is commitment. In all facets of life, commitment is required to be successful.
Most often I hear the speeches and quotes about committing when it comes to athletics. As a former coach, I wanted 100 percent commitment from everyone on the team 100 percent of the time. Success came when the strength of the group as a whole exceeded the strength of the individuals that made up the group.  The desire to push each other hard to achieve team goals required commitment from everyone involved.
Commitment is also required in a child’s education. Much like the sports reference above, success in school requires a commitment from a team. The team I refer to includes the student, parents, guardians, teachers, administrators, coaches, siblings, etc. As the old adage says, it takes a village to raise a child.
Students need to commit to giving their best every day. Success in the real world is about competition and effort to rise above life’s tests. School is a microcosm of what students will experience later in life. Life skills such as having the responsibility to complete a task on time, being a reliable team member, respecting the opinion of others and not casting judgment are all necessary to success in school and in life. It requires effort, dedication and time to see success in school.  By making a commitment to give their best every day, students will achieve success at school.
The adults at home, be it parents, grandparents, siblings, etc., are a vital component of a student’s academic success. Parents must make a commitment to support the education of their student in any way possible. Commit to communicating with teachers, creating specific homework times at home, reading a book with a child, and being available to help with school work. Commit to celebrating the successes of your student, no matter how small. Your student’s commitment will be greater if they know you are behind them 100 percent in this endeavor.
The Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation is committed to providing students with a world class education in a safe environment. The recent tragedy in Newtown, Conn., has caused many schools to evaluate safety plans.  Tippecanoe Valley is no exception.
School safety and security audits at each building have taken place to review the current safety procedures and re-evaluate any concerns. Since Columbine, all buildings at TVSC have been locked with buzz-in entry and security cameras at the door. In addition, a school resource officer has been available at TVSC for many years. The emergency response and crisis intervention team holds regular meetings to evaluate our procedures on an ongoing basis. TVSC is committed to providing a school that is safe, so students can focus on academic success.
Together, as a community, we must continue to strengthen the commitment we make to educate our children.  Success is achievable for all when we commit as a team to get the job done.[[In-content Ad]]
