Every year, the Kosciusko Coalition on Drug Education presents its program proposals to the county commissioners for approval.

And once again Tuesday the commissioners unanimously approved the amounts to be funded. The funding now must be approved by the Kosciusko County Council.

The funding comes from user fees from the county clerk's office - not tax dollars - and will be used for drug prevention, education, intervention, treatment and law enforcement in the county.

For 2003, KCODE received requests totaling $150,904.03. The amount approved to be funded totals $86,000. Of the amount to be funded, $34,800 will go toward prevention and education, $21,500 toward intervention and treatment, $22,700 toward law enforcement and $7,000 for multiple service areas.

The largest awards are $10,260 to five Bowen Center programs; $10,000 to Kosciusko County DARE; and $6,000 to the YMCA for teen nights. An even $7,000 will pay for salaries, supplies, etc., for the KCODE coordinator.

Various agencies receiving the money include Boys & Girls Club of Kosciusko County; Whitko High School SADD; Warsaw DARE; Pierceton Police Department DARE; Kosciusko County DARE; Mentone Elementary; YMCA; 24-Hour Club; Bowen Center; Right Start-Right Step; the police departments of Silver Lake, Winona Lake, Milford, Indiana State, Pierceton, Mentone, Warsaw and the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department; Danny Hall and Kosciusko County Joint Gang.

In other business, the county commissioners:

• Approved for the Master Gardeners' Club to place a 2-foot by 2-foot sign on the courthouse lawn for a month.

• Tabled a request by VSP-TV to film a commercial in the courthouse.

• Approved the Kosciusko Area Bus Service's last capital voucher of the year.

• Approved Eldon Watkins to continue serving on the county drainage board.

• Approved Fay Medlock and Deb Wiggins to serve on the Kosciusko County Convention and Visitors Bureau board.

• Approved the renewal of the county highway department's annual bids.

• Approved an agreement with the town of Syracuse for snowplowing.

• Approved to accept Lincoln Park subdivision, phase five, into the county for maintenance as well as Saw Grass Estates subdivision.

• Approved Eugene Cotton and Donovan Sellers to serve on the Monroe Township Advisory Board.

• Approved the signing of interlocal agreements for geographical imaging system aerial photography. Winona Lake's share is $6,062 and Syracuse's is $3,637 for the photos.

Kosciusko County commissioners are Brad Jackson, Avis Gunter and Ron Truex. They meet at 9 a.m. in the county courthouse every other Tuesday. [[In-content Ad]]
