Sheriff Aaron Rovenstine introduced four interns at the Kosciusko County Commissioner's meeting Tuesday.

They are: Kory Fields, a sophomore at Indiana University; Dan Meza, a Warsaw Community High School graduate and now a full-time jailer; Ashley Wyatt, a University of Indianapolis junior who has worked summers for the department the last three years; and Travis Nichols, a senior at Ball State University who will graduate when his internship is complete July 23.

Ed Rock said the new security identification cards are about 98 percent complete. He advised the commissioners that a national domestic bioterriorism conference, usually held in Alabama, will be in Kosciusko County in August.

Commissioner Ron Truex said he attended part of a recent District II, seven-county exercise and was impressed with the organizing and planning efforts of emergency service agencies.

"Most of us assume we'll be save in the event of an emergency, people are unaware of all the preparation time that goes into it," he said.

Highway department director Dennis Pletcher presented a request to install speed bumps on East Shore Drive, which was denied. Pletcher noted that it is a through road, not a short street in a subdivision.

Commissioner Brad Jackson said he thought speed bumps would just cause more accidents.

County administrator Ron Robinson noted work has begun on the courthouse infrastructure upgrades and crews working on heating, plumbing and electrical systems are in after regular working hours, from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Outside, the stone railings have been removed from the courthouse stairs and repairs are being made.

The commissioners approved a monthly payment schedule to A. Hattersley and Sons, Fort Wayne, the main contractors for the construction project. A check for $253,873 will be immediately forwarded followed by regular payments of $501,747 the last paydays in the months of June through September. The final check, $463,097, is scheduled for October pending final approval of the work.

Robinson said the construction timeline is being met.

The board also:

• Approved Lee Taylor's request to officially name a street "Maple Run" in the Maple Run subdivision. Taylor works for the Area Planning Commission. She said the street name was never approved although all the residents use Maple Run for their mailing address.

• Received an information packet on the engineering company of Butler Fairman and Seufert of Bluffton, presented by Tobias Steffen.

County commissioners are Brad Jackson and Ron Truex. Avis Gunter was absent. [[In-content Ad]]
