In case of emergency, a person should call 911.
In Kosciusko County in 2000, there were 13,036 emergency 911 calls, according to statistics compiled from the Kosciusko Communication Center.
Tuesday, county administrator Ron Robinson provided the county commissioners with a breakdown of the statistics.
"It is amazing," said commissioner Avis Gunter.
Most of the calls were made from the city of Warsaw, which had 5,943 911 calls in 2000. Second was Syracuse, with 1,226, and third was North Webster, with 928. South Whitley had no 911 calls in 2000, Plymouth had only five and Akron had 32.
The majority of 911 calls were made in August (1,227) and July (1,220). The fewest 911 calls were made in November (909) and February (960).
In addition, 40,704 service calls were made to local police, EMS and fire departments. Of the 40,704 service calls, 32,133 were for police, 6,454 were for EMS and 2,117 were for fire departments.
For police, the sheriff's office had the most calls, with 19,150, followed by the Warsaw Police Department with 6,031. Only two service calls were made to the Nappanee Police Department through the Communication Center and 91 to the Claypool Police Department.
Most service calls were made in December (3,608) and October (3,551).
In 1998, there were 21,850 service calls to the police and 22,941 in 1999.
Of the EMS service calls, Multi-Township EMS had the most with 3,587 followed by North Webster with 765. South Whitley had only four through the Communication Center and Akron had 14.
The most EMS calls were made in July (676) and June (587) with the least in October (478) and November (477).
In 1998, there were 5,387 EMS service calls and 5,211 in 1999.
Of the 2,117 fire service calls, Warsaw had the most with 532 followed by North Webster with 198. Only 25 were out-of-county and Nappanee had 26, with both Burket and Silver Lake with 59 calls.
In 1998, there were 1,220 fire department service calls and 1,455 in 1999.
The report also provides the Kosciusko Sheriff's Department analysis by day of the week for 2000. According to the analysis, there were 1,666 property damage accidents; 969 information calls; 1,982 traffic stops; 14 subjects with guns; 42 attempted suicides and seven suicides; 946 felony thefts; 400 welfare checks; 447 abandoned vehicles; 83 auto thefts; two bomb threats; 20 child abuse reports; 31 child molestings; 16 natural deaths; 389 domestic complaints; 44 drug complaints; 405 juvenile complaints; 47 missing persons; three public indecency reports; and 11 reports of rape with non-deadly force.
The Kosciukso Communication Center was formed when the county and Warsaw dispatch centers were combined in August.
Robinson said the center "seems to be working well" and prevents the duplication of services.
The Center also is working on having its own dispatch instructors instead of sending employees out to be trained. The cost to have someone trained in dispatch is "astronomical," Robinson said. [[In-content Ad]]
