The seven-county district, which includes Kosciusko, will be reimbursed the $60,000 for training purposes. The Kosciusko County Auditor’s Office is the fiscal agent for the grant, for which the office will be paid, noted Dist. 2 Training Coordinator John Grolich, who presented the grant this morning.
The annual Indiana Firefighter Training System Grant is given through the state Department of Homeland Security and funded by fireworks sales tax, Grolich added.
Also during the meeting, commissioners approved about $34,000 for chimney and slate roof repair to the Kosciusko County Courthouse. County Administrator Ron Robinson said there is more work that could be done next year, but that these repairs are an emergency because of water damage.
And commissioners recognized James E. Plummer Sr. as the Veteran of the Month. Veterans Affairs Officer Rich Maron noted that unlike many veterans he awards, who typically serve two to four years, the Syracuse resident made a 20-year career in the U.S. Air Force.
Plummer enlisted in 1954 and until his retirement at the rank of major in 1974, served on bases and in embassies in Japan, Taiwan and Germany, as well as across America. He was also stationed in Da Nang during a combat tour in the Vietnam War.
Plummer remarked on a few highlights of his two-decade career, including a Bob Hope USO tour in Taiwan and the fact that his family was able to stay with him along the way. He had one son born in France and another in Japan, he said, and he was able to take them around the world when they were growing up.[[In-content Ad]]
