Columbia City Ice Festival Set For Jan. 26-27
July 28, 2016 at 4:25 p.m.
By Staff Report-
Last year, 13 ice carvers from three states took part in carving more than 60 blocks of ice to make the Columbia City community an "Ice Carving Paradise." Thanks to the cold weather, it lasted several weeks.
Many of the blocks this year, purchased by area businesses and organizations, will be carved on the courthouse lawn Jan. 26 beginning at 8 a.m. Some of the blocks will be carved in front of the businesses to greet customers at their location.
Jan. 27 brings a possible 12 or more carvers to compete in a three-hour carving competition from noon to 3 p.m. at the courthouse. Winners receive cash prizes. An area near the gazebo will be set up for the public to vote on the "People's Choice Award."
A new event for the festival is set for Jan. 27, adding "fire" to the ice. The senior citizens organization is planning a chili cook-off competition that will be held in the warming tent on the courthouse lawn. The committee is looking for anyone that has "the best" chili recipe they want to cook up and share with the community during the festival.
Anyone who would prefer to taste instead of cook the chili will get their chance to help judge for the "People's Choice Award" for chili after noon Jan. 27. There also will be cash prizes for the chili categories. For more information on the cook-off, contact Marie Hockemeyer at 260-799-4048.
Local vendors will be available with a variety of food and drinks for purchase on Jan. 26-27 near the courthouse square. Leadership Whitley County will have "hand warmers" available for purchase for a small fee.
Anyone interested in purchasing a block of ice for their own special sculpture, or interested in sponsoring the event to help cover costs, call 260-248-8131.[[In-content Ad]]
